John Barnes
John L. Barnes brings more than twenty-five years of national
and international corporate experience to the helm of
Barnes Enterprises, Inc. Prior to the formation of Barnes
Enterprises, Inc. he served as the Senior Vice President
and Chief Financial Officer of United Media Enterprises-a
subsidiary of the E.W. Scripps Company-with revenues of
$150 million, 550 employees, eight subsidiaries and two
joint ventures.
Among the varied responsibilities of CFO (and unofficially,
COO) Barnes was responsible for the acquisition and
divesture policy, valuation analyses for acquired or
divested companies, and conception and implementation
of global strategy for establishing operations in major
international markets. His work resulted in the incorporation
of United Media, Japan; United Media, The Netherlands;
United Media, Hong Kong; and United Media, Canada. Barnes
also served on the Board of Directors of United Media
K.K. (Japan); United Media, Hong Kong, and United Media,
Canada.
Barnes served as Director of Planning, Budget and Financial
Analysis for American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. where
he conducted financial analysis that resulted in the
$200 million acquisition of ESPN, the largest sports
network in the world, and the successful launch of A&E
and Lifetime Television Networks, two of the nation's
most preeminent cable television networks. Prior to
joining American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., Barnes
served as Senior Financial Analyst at PepsiCo, Inc.
for newly acquired companies of PepsiCo, Pizza Hut and
Taco Bell.
John L. Barnes began his esteemed career in the Treasurer's
Office of General Motors Corporation. This department
was known as the "training ground" for all
the top financial executives at GM. Barnes received
his MBA from Columbia University and has served on the
Financial Advisory Board of the American Management
Association.
Barnes is the co-author of BLG Ventures’ 2002
Guide to Venture Capital and Angel Investors for Women
and Minorities (Lewis Publishing, 2002).
